Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that makes it difficult to fall asleep, stay asleep, and/or get restful sleep. It can be caused by stress, anxiety, poor sleep habits, medical conditions, or substance use. Chronic insomnia can negatively affect mood, energy levels, and overall health.

Both CBD and THC, compounds found in cannabis, can potentially aid sleep, but they work in different ways.

CBD (Cannabidiol)

·         Non-Psychoactive: CBD doesn’t cause a “high,” making it a better option than THC for those sensitive to psychoactive effects.

·         Promotes Relaxation: CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and may help regulate sleep-wake cycles.

·         Reduce Anxiety and Stress: CBD may help calm the mind, reducing anxiety and stress that can contribute to insomnia.

·         REM Sleep Improvement: Some studies suggest that CBD can help regulate sleep cycles, potentially improving sleep quality.

Cannabis (THC and Other Cannabinoids)

·         Induce Sleep Faster: THC has sedative properties that may help people fall asleep more quickly.

·         Pain Relief: THC can reduce pain, which may help those whose insomnia is related to chronic pain conditions.

·         Reduce REM Sleep: THC may be beneficial for people with PTSD or nightmares, but may not be ideal for long-term sleep health.

·         Reduces Sleep Disturbances: Some people find THC helps them stay asleep longer.

CBN (Cannabinol)

While CBD and THC may aid those with insomnia, CBN (cannabinol) is the real star of the show when it comes to sleep. CBN is a cannabinoid with strong sedative properties. While research is ongoing, some users report that it promotes relaxation and improves sleep quality. Here’s how CBN might help with insomnia:

·         Anxiety Reduction: While not as well-known for anxiety relief as CBD, some users report that CBN helps them feel calmer, which can improve sleep.

·         Interaction with the ECS: CBN interacts with CB1 and CB2 receptors, which play a role in regulating sleep and relaxation.

·         Pain and Inflammation Relief: If insomnia is due to pain or inflammation, CBN may provide some relief, making sleep more comfortable.

·         Potential Muscle Relaxation: CBN may help reduce muscle tension, making it easier to fall asleep.

·         Sedative Effects: CBN is believed to have mild sedative properties, especially when combined with THC. Some studies suggest it may prolong sleep duration.

How to Use CBN for Sleep

CBN can be taken in several different forms including oil/tincture, capsules, and edibles. Oil is taken sublingually (under the tongue) for faster absorption. Capsules provide a slower release but long-lasting effects, while edibles are a tasty option with effects lasting several hours. For those who have trouble falling asleep, CBN should be consumed 30-60 minutes before trying to sleep, while those who have trouble staying asleep should consume CBN at bedtime.

How CBN Compares to CBD and THC

While a combination of both CBD and THC (full spectrum cannabis or specific ratios of CBD:THC) may offer balanced sleep support, CBN is strongly recommended when it comes to sleep and those suffering from insomnia.

* Important Considerations *

CBN is considered more sedative and sleep-inducing, while CBD is better for anxiety and stress, which can indirectly improve sleep. Effects of cannabis products vary by individual, so it may take experimentation to find the right dose. Always check with a medical professional before discontinuing any medications.
